India: Mangrove Restauration & Ecology in Tamil Nadu

Since 2005 MANGREEN promotes the reforestation of mangroves at the coastal area of Tamil Nadu. In collaboration with the coastal communities more than 15.000 seedlings have been planted. 5.000 students and their teachers have participated in this activities. The project goes on. In many areas it is impossible to avoid using the productive and sensitive forests because the lagoons and shallow water occupied by mangroves form the basis of many villages in tropical coastal areas. In future therefore, the restoration of this habitat and its sustainable use through integrated management will be of particular importance.

Kenya: Perspectives for the Fisherfolk at the Kenyan South Coast

The fishing waters that suffer especially from over-fishing are those near the beach, the reef parallel to the coast, and the lagoon formed by the reef. The lagoon is easy to reach and can also be safely fished using a dug-out canoe. Those who have no canoe hunt with a spear for fish. However, to fish outside the reef for prawns, tuna or shark one must have a more seaworthy boat. A traditional dhow and adequate equipment form a solution. A precondition is sufficient training for the fishermen and expierience to enhance safety at sea. We are going to support the local fishermen's plan.
